Micro-finance in a remittance economy
Financial inclusion has become an emerging focus for policymakers around the world, and it is nowhere more relevant than in India. Analysts estimate that up to half the Indian households do not have a bank account. In fact, the Census 2011 found that more than 40 per cent of the population lives two km or more from the nearest bank branch or agent.
For India to facilitate more balanced economic development, universal access to basic financial services is essential.
There are no easy solutions. Strict regulation of banking and other financial services is vital to address money laundering, terrorist financing and fraud.

10 EU nations to push for transaction tax
Germany and nine other European Union nations will press ahead with plans to introduce a financial market transaction tax, following failed attempt for an agreement to levy it across the EU.
Finance ministers of the 27-nation EU, who met in Luxembourg on Friday, came to the conclusion that an agreement to impose the tax across the bloc will not be possible in the foreseeable future, German Finance Minister, Mr Wolfgang Schaeuble, told the media after the meeting.
Therefore, 10 nations who are willing to cooperate have decided to move forward by taking the necessary steps on the national level, and to ask the European Commission to draw up legislative proposals to introduce the tax.
World leaders weigh stimulus vs austerity at G-20
With major European economies on the brink of collapse, leaders concluding an annual Group of 20 meeting sought Tuesday to reassure the world that they would find a way to put out the debt-fueled economic wildfire that has threatened banks, wiped out jobs and toppled governments across the continent.
But the presidents and prime ministers gathered in this seaside resort seemed content to delay any major decisions for a while longer, releasing only a general statement that stopped short of committing any nations to greater spending unless conditions worsen and urging fiscal responsibility.

IBM supercomputer overtakes Fujitsu as world's fastest
IBM's Sequoia has taken the top spot
on the list of the world's fastest supercomputers for the US.
The newly installed system trumped Japan's K Computer made by Fujitsu which fell to second place.
It is the first time the US can claim pole position since it was beaten by China two years ago.
Sequoia will be used to carry out simulations to help extend the life of aging nuclear weapons, avoiding the need for real-world underground tests.
It is installed at the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.
"While Sequoia may be the fastest, the underlying computing capabilities it provides give us increased confidence in the nation's nuclear deterrent," said National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) administrator Thomas D'Agostino.

Govt says no to raising 49 pc FDI cap in aviation sector
Government today ruled out raising the 49 per cent FDI cap in the Indian aviation sector.
"I don't think so. Because the 1934 Civil Aviation Act says management has to be in Indian hands, majority of directors have to be Indian. Whatever worries people have, government will still decide the routes, government will still give at what time they fly and where," Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh told reporters while replying to a query.
"Now, they have all changed. See, it is a capital- intensive industry... Even working capital they are not getting. It is only if you allow them to, airlines to invest 49 per cent. FDI is already allowed. We are not asking anybody to take it. It is not compulsory. Those who do not want it, fine," he said when it was pointed out that some airlines favoured raising the 49 per cent FDI cap.

India ranks 55th on foreign money in Swiss banks
Indians’ money in Swiss banks may have risen for the first time in five years, but they account for a meagre 0.14 per cent of total foreign wealth deposited there — putting India at 55th place globally for such funds.
The total overseas funds in Switzerland’s banking system stood at 1.53 trillion Swiss francs (about Rs. 90 trillion) at the end of 2011, which included 2.18 billion Swiss francs (Rs. 12,700 crore) belonging to Indian individuals and entities.
While India accounted for only 0.14 per cent of total foreign money in Swiss banks, the U.K. accounted for the largest share of little over 20 per cent, followed closely by the U.S. with about 18 per cent.
