Aung San Suu Kyi has finally received her honourary degree from Oxford University. The leader of Myanmar's opposition is being honoured on 20 june at the university's Encaenia ceremony, in which it presents honourary degrees to distinguished people.Suu Kyi, who is making her first visits outside of her native country in 24 years, was awarded the honourary doctorate in civil law in 1993 but was unable to collect it under house arrest in Myanmar.She studied philosophy, politics and economics at St. Hugh's College in Oxford between 1964 and 1967.

Rio+20 the U N Conference on Sustainable Development took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 20 to 22 June 2012. The conference marked the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro (Since the conference marked 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), it was named Rio+20). The UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Sha Zukang was appointed the UN Secretary-General for the Rio+20 Conference.

The two-day conference was held with an objective to renew political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges. Heads of 172 States and Government have attended the conference.

B.K.Roy Burman- An anthropologist and social scientist, died on 26 June 2012. He served as Director of the Tribal Research Institute. Prof. Burman served as the chairman of numerous international, national and State-level committees. He was associated with non-government organizations and worked for the Scheduled Tribes. In addition, he had worked as the chairman of the Futorology Commission of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences. Indian Rupee plunged to an all time low of 56.90 rupees against the US dollar on 22 June 2012 on global risk aversion and demand for dollar. India’s slipping domestic growth, declining industrial output figure, RBI’s stringent monetary policy stance, persistent high rate of inflation and credit rating downgrade by international rating agencies like Fitch and Standard and Poor’s have prompted the worsening of Indian rupee against the dollar. Rupee, given its current trading status, is proving to be Asia's worst performing currency. The currency has also been the poorest performer among the all-Asian currencies this week, on a 5-day basis. So far, the Indian currency had tumbled 6.7 per cent in the year 2012. International credit rating agency Fitch revised the credit outlook of India to negative on 18 June 2012. The agency cited rampant corruption and stalled reform existing in the country as the reason behind the move to downgrade the country's credit rating.

India and South Korea on 28 June decided to enhance engagement in civil nuclear energy cooperation as well as space activities including the launch of Korean satellites by India.

June 2012 National Affairs

The Union Ministry of Defence (MoD) on 22 June 2012 approved defence proposals worth over 20000 crore rupees for the procurement of defence eqipments for the Indian army. The proposals were accepted by the government in a meeting chaired by Defence Minister AK Antony.

The government in the meeting cleared an IAF proposals worth over 8500 crore rupees for procuring 14 Dornier aircraft and setting up a nationwide communication network and guns for navy and the coast guard ships. Besides, the proposal for procuring eight regiments of QR-SAMs worth over 10000 crore rupees was also approved by the defence ministry. The decision to accelerate the defence procurements came following the former Army Chief Gen VK Singh’s letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in which he had raised serious questions over the preparedness of India’s defence system.

Former Bank of Maharashtra chairman Anup Sankar Bhattacharya takes over as director of IBPS

Former Bank of Maharashtra chairman Anup Sankar Bhattacharya has taken over as the director of Institute of Banking Personnel Selection or IBPS, which conducts common admission tests for bank recruitment.

Bhattacharya will replace M Balachandran who is resigning today.

The importance of IBPS has grown in recent years after the abolition of Banking Services Recruitment Board. It handled a whopping 15 million applications in 2011-12 while it boasts of having a capacity of testing one million candidates simultaneously across 200 centres in one session.

Aung San Suu Kyi To Get Honorary Doctorate From Oxford

Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is to receive an honorary doctorate from Oxford University.

The advanced degree in civil law will be presented during the institution's annual Encaenia ceremony.
It is the first time Suu Kyi has visited Oxford for decades, where she lived during the 1980s with her late husband, Tibetan scholar Michael Aris, and their sons Alexander and Kim.

The pro-democracy campaigner who spent years under house arrest in Burma is to receive the honorary degree she was awarded by Oxford in April 1993. She has been unable to receive it in person until now.

India-Russia hypersonic missile to be ready by 2017

India and Russia could be one of the first nations in the world to flight test hypersonic missiles, which fly at five to seven times the speed of sound.

"The Hypersonic BrahMos version of the cruise missile would be ready for flight testing in 2017", Sivathanu Pillai, chief executive officer of the Russian-Indian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace said here. The new missiles would be capable of flying at speeds of Mach 5- Mach 7.

"I think we will need about five years to develop the first fully-functional prototype (of the hypersonic missile)", he announced, adding "we have already carried out a series of lab tests at the speed of 6.5 Mach".

Madhya Pradesh gets United Nations Public Service Award

 Madhya Pradesh (MP) has been conferred upon prestigious United Nations Public Service Award at New York in United State of America (USA). MP minister of state for public services management Brijendra Pratap Singh and deputy secretary of his department Manohar Dube received the award at a grand function in US on Monday, official said.

A delegation from MP will also participate in inter-ministerial conference tomorrow. MP has bagged the award in second prize category for "Improving the delivery of public services", they added.

Delhi most competitive city in India, ranked 68th in list of world's major cities

Delhi has been named the most competitive city in India for its demonstrated ability to attract capital, business, talent and tourists by a new Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) research report.

The study, which has been commissioned by the Citigroup, ranked Delhi at number 68 in the list of 120 of the world's major cities.

The national Capital has edged out financial hub of Mumbai, which ranked 70th in the index, followed by Bangalore, India's Silicon Valley, at 79th rank, Pune at 97, Chennai at 105 and Kolkata at 106.

The report, entitled Hot Spots, ranks the most competitive cities in the world for their demonstrated ability to attract capital, business, talent and tourists.

Micro-finance in a remittance economy

Financial inclusion has become an emerging focus for policymakers around the world, and it is nowhere more relevant than in India. Analysts estimate that up to half the Indian households do not have a bank account. In fact, the Census 2011 found that more than 40 per cent of the population lives two km or more from the nearest bank branch or agent.

For India to facilitate more balanced economic development, universal access to basic financial services is essential.

There are no easy solutions. Strict regulation of banking and other financial services is vital to address money laundering, terrorist financing and fraud.

Antonis Samaras sworn in as Greece prime minister

Antonis Samaras, leader of the New Democracy party, was on Wednesday evening sworn in as the new prime minister of Greece.

The presidential office said the Greek leader of the centre-right New Democracy party, Antonis Samaras, has become the new prime minister of the country, RIA Novosti reported.
Samaras's New Democracy party won 129 seats of 300 in the June 17 parliamentary elections.

The socialist party Pasok (with 33 seats) and the Democratic Left party (with 17 seats) formed the new coalition government with the New Democracy party.

10 EU nations to push for transaction tax

Germany and nine other European Union nations will press ahead with plans to introduce a financial market transaction tax, following failed attempt for an agreement to levy it across the EU.

Finance ministers of the 27-nation EU, who met in Luxembourg on Friday, came to the conclusion that an agreement to impose the tax across the bloc will not be possible in the foreseeable future, German Finance Minister, Mr Wolfgang Schaeuble, told the media after the meeting.

Therefore, 10 nations who are willing to cooperate have decided to move forward by taking the necessary steps on the national level, and to ask the European Commission to draw up legislative proposals to introduce the tax.

World leaders weigh stimulus vs austerity at G-20

With major European economies on the brink of collapse, leaders concluding an annual Group of 20 meeting sought Tuesday to reassure the world that they would find a way to put out the debt-fueled economic wildfire that has threatened banks, wiped out jobs and toppled governments across the continent.

But the presidents and prime ministers gathered in this seaside resort seemed content to delay any major decisions for a while longer, releasing only a general statement that stopped short of committing any nations to greater spending unless conditions worsen and urging fiscal responsibility.

Red list has 132 species of plants, animals from India

The Red list of threatened species, prepared by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), has listed 132 species of plants and animals as Critically Endangered, the most threatened category, from India.

Plants seemed to be the most threatened life form with 60 species being listed as Critically Endangered and 141 as Endangered.

The Critically Endangered list included 18 species of amphibians, 14 fishes and 10 mammals. There are also 15 bird species in the category. The agency listed 310 species as Endangered ones, including 69 fishes, 38 mammals and 32 amphibians. Two plant species were reported to be extinct in the wild, including the Euphorbia mayuranthanii of Kerala. A leaf frog species and six plants were recorded as extinct, according to the latest assessment.
